2026 marks 50 years of personal training in martial arts and over 35 years as a health practitioner. Stephen has dedicated his life to studying and teaching Eastern philosophy, martial arts, meditation, yoga, and personal health practices. He has trained under many of the masters who originally brought martial arts to Australia and holds senior belts in several styles, including three senior black belts.

Stephen is recognised as the founder and head teacher of Ren Shen Dao, a compassionate martial art based on a combination of Japanese, Korean, and Chinese martial arts. Eastern philosophy, martial arts, yoga, meditation, shiatsu, and Chinese medicine form the backbone of both his healing and martial arts methods. Stephen believes that martial arts should only be used in self-defence.

While teaching and working in health and martial arts, he also held senior business roles in the corporate sector, including CEO, Director, and GM positions. In 1997, he was finally able to unite his long-standing passions for health, acupuncture, traditional Chinese herbal medicine, shiatsu, and several other massage styles, and began doing what he loved full-time.

Stephen brings many years of clinical practice and experience from more than 30,000 treatments to his acupuncture work. Even so, he does not think in terms of mastery. He approaches each person as an individual, giving careful attention to their presentation and responding with the skills, judgement, and experience he has developed over time. Stephen still sees himself as a student of the work. For him, titles matter less than being of genuine help to the person in front of him.

His martial arts training has continued since 1976, and he has taught continuously throughout that time. The principles of Eastern philosophy, martial arts, yoga, meditation, shiatsu, and Chinese medicine continue to underpin his work, both in healing and in practice.

Stephen Phillips of Eastern Medicine brings many years of experience to his work as a health practitioner, offering personalised care for a wide range of physical and emotional health concerns. His work may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and nutritional coaching, depending on the individual and their needs.

Outside the clinic, Stephen’s life is deeply shaped by both his Australian upbringing and his long involvement in traditional Asian arts, as well as by a strong commitment to the natural world. He lives in the Blue Mountains with his wife and teenage children and spends much of his time with family and friends in the bush. He is a keen gardener, has studied permaculture and Chinese bonsai, and enjoys growing a wide range of herbs and foods.

Stephen has a strong interest in ecology, ecotracking, and the protection of animals and biodiversity. His interest in tracking is grounded in observation, understanding, and preservation, rather than hunting. He values learning to read the landscape carefully, to understand animal movement and behaviour, and to deepen his respect for the unique environments, bush foods, and plant medicines of Australia.

He is also the current President of the Lithgow VRA NSW Rescue Squad and serves as a GLR Operator with the road crash and vertical rescue teams. His community work reflects a long-standing commitment to practical service and care for others.

When he is not working, volunteering, or studying, Stephen enjoys tinkering in his shed, practising calligraphy, and making bowls and cups from clay. Together with his family, he has spent many years camping and bushwalking in the Australian bush, continuing a lifelong connection with the land, its living systems, and the values of care, attention, and respect that also inform his work in clinic.
